“Go away.” His voice barely a whisper on the thick summer air. “I’ll kill you.”

Alicia gripped the scalpel. She could slide it across his neck in a flash, and it’d be over. No one would have to know. A mercy killing, of sorts. Though she’d be lying to herself to categorize it as such.

Her grandmother’s words echoed. Alicia was a healer, not a killer.

From the looks of the lion’s shirt, already dark, yet now wet with blood, he might not recover even with her best efforts to save him. The scent of gunpowder and burnt flesh peppered the blood-laden air. The lions had left him to die under a bush in bear territory, shot in the shoulder.

She shook her head and settled to the ground on her knees. “I’m not going anywhere.” The strength of her voice hid her fear, though he might sense it anyway. His scent was that of a strong and confident shifter, even in his current state.

He looked at her.

She blinked, trying to calm the adrenaline rush that shot through her. His eyes, mesmerizing and wide, lured her in, and she couldn’t turn away. Deep green or maybe brown or even both, they were a color she’d never seen and his gaze was magnetic. Her mouth went dry.

He was her sworn enemy. Sexy, but injured.

She glanced to the sky, but didn’t see Grandmother Hawk. Typical. Recently, she’d started leaving Alicia to figure out the moral decisions on her own, trusting that she would make the right one.

Part of the training.

“Shit.” The scalpel had warmed in her hands, and the sun glinted off the blade in a flash of silvery-white. What would her grandmother do? No doubt, she’d help the lion. Maybe she wouldn’t tell the bears, who she was loyal to, but she’d never let a lion die if she could heal him. She’d never intentionally let anyone die on her watch.

“War is for the weak minded,” she’d always said. Alicia was beginning to think she was right. Why couldn’t shifters all get along?

Because the damn lions wanted the bears’ territory. If they’d stayed in their own area, none of the bloodshed would’ve happened. Even though Alicia had heard the stories of the lions and bears and wolves sharing the cave, the actuality felt as foreign as items in an ancient history book. As remote as a fairy tale.

Fantasy.

“Go.” He turned away, but she could still see the strain on his face as he winced.

His black hair, falling to his shoulders, was damp and matted. How early in the battle had he been wounded? He was bound to be dehydrated.

“I’m here to help. Like it or not.” She slid the scalpel into its sheath and back into the pocket of her pack. Her earlier assessment was correct. The lion was no threat at the moment. He could barely move. The rise and fall of his chest showed his respirations were high and labored. Blood loss was nearing the severe level.

He needed help before his body went into shock.

She looked back toward the trail to make sure she was alone. If Griff or Derek found out about him, the lion wouldn’t need help anymore and her time as medic would be over.

She’d worry about that another day. She had a lion to save.

Guest Post by Kerry Adrienne:

The art of writing a book blurb

Book Blurbs! The mere mention usually makes authors freak out and doubt their ability to even put a sentence together. Perhaps the only thing worse is the ever-dreaded synopsis!

I mean, really, how do you summarize the high points of a 50-80K word novel in a couple of paragraphs, make it interesting, not give away the plot, and not pull out every hair on your body in the process?

I’ve written a lot of blurbs and edited a lot more. I don’t enjoy it. It’s a ton of pressure and I usually put in too many adjectives and adverbs rather than sticking to the bones of the story.

Who are the main characters, what do they want, and why can’t they have it? And what will make a reader think, I need to read this book!

Sounds easy? It’s not. Not for me. Sometimes, I’ll come up with what seems like a good phrase—then it’s the rest of the blurb that becomes impossible. Sometimes, I ramble about the characters and end up chopping 400 words.

With Carina Press, where my Shifter Wars books are published, I don’t have to stress over the blurb, as they have a team to write them. And I think they do a great job. I cannot tell you how much getting an awesome blurb makes an author go, oh crap! Is my story good enough? And then work even harder to make sure!

Another important thing that blurbs need are keywords for searches. For Shifter Wars, seeing “shifter” and other words is really important. Thankfully, Carina knows all about that, too.

I do have to write the synopsis and the book, though. Haha.

How about you? Do blurbs make you want to read or discard a book? Can blurbs be too long? And which sells a book to you more quickly, a fantastic cover or a great blurb?

Thanks for having me!

“Let’s do this.” Alicia wiped the sweat from her forehead, tugged her medic pack higher on her shoulder, and trudged deeper into the forest, away from the cave.
Every muscle burned and her head throbbed. Surely she’d found all the wounded bears by now.
Can’t take a chance I’ve missed anyone. Too many lost already.
Once she was positive all bears were accounted for, she’d collapse into bed. But until then, she’d search. The air hung heavy with the dank odor of battle, dried blood, and the ghosts of violence. A full day had passed, but Deep Creek was forever scarred from the agony that had ripped shifters apart on its forest floors.
Healing would take more than bandages and incense.
Damn lions. Always looking for a fight. The bears wouldn’t forget the day the lions attacked.
“Alicia?” The voice sounded from behind her, a hint of agitation in the tone. “Where are you going?”
She paused, steeling herself, and then turned.
      Derek.
Concern clouded his face. Rarely one to show stress, the battle had shaken him profoundly, and deep hollows had formed under his eyes. Shell-shocked, yet still the strong alpha always concerned about those he cared about. Bria was fortunate to have such a powerful protector as mate.
“I’m checking for wounded.” Alicia pushed a lock of red hair behind her ear and cinched her ponytail. The after-battle taste of nausea and heat burned her throat and sat in her stomach like a rock. She didn’t need to hear Derek’s speech, but she knew it was coming.
“Alone?” He put his hands on his hips.
“I’ll be back before dark—there are several hours of daylight left.” A tingle of dread traveled up her spine. Though she loved being a medic and healer, battlefield trauma treatment was a bit beyond her training.
“You shouldn’t be by yourself. The lions might be prowling around looking for their own wounded. Or a stray bear to ambush.” Derek’s hair hung loose and limp around his shoulders. His beard was scraggly and he had a dark bruise over his eyebrow.
She’d never seen him look so rough.
Of course he’d try to stop her. He wasn’t being bossy. He worried. “I need to check thoroughly. Just in case.” He wasn’t the only one who worried, but she’d never forgive herself if she missed a wounded bear.
He tromped toward her, his steps heavy with exhaustion. “I’ll help. We’ve lost too many friends and family already. I’m not losing you too.”
“There’s nothing you can do to help.”
He stared into the forest and sniffed the air. “I can shift and we can cover more ground.”
“Go back to the cave. I’m sure Bria needs you right now. She’s been exposed to so many new things, some violent, in a short amount of time. I know she’s a strong woman, but it’s a tremendous amount for a human to process. She’s been thrown into the middle of this war, unprepared.”
      Derek scowled. “I know.”
She touched his shoulder and looked into his eyes. “She needs you by her side, not left alone with a bunch of grumpy and wounded bears.”
He pulled away. “But she’s safe in the cave. You aren’t.”
“Seriously?” Alicia crossed her arms and formed the sourest face she could fake. “You really think I can’t take care of myself? I’ve been doing it a long time.”
      “It’s not that.”
“Then what? The lions have gone home with their tails between their legs.”
“I worry about you.” His voice softened.
“I know you do, and I appreciate it. I’m going to check the brush on the way to the creek then I’ll be back. I won’t be gone more than an hour or two.”
His scowl deepened, and he chewed his lip hard, annoyance flashing in his features. “You’re so stubborn.”
      “Your mate needs you. Go.”
She almost smiled, but held back. It was easy to see why Bria was attracted to Derek. He’d always been a good friend, looking out for Alicia as they grew up together in the clan. Sometimes he was overprotective, but she understood why most women swooned over him.
Who didn’t want a giant bear hug from a good-looking and sweet man?

Excerpt from Little Bits of Karma

James took a shower and got dressed. He couldn’t leave the house soon enough to pay Bryce a visit. Bryce owned a chain of martial arts studios, and James knew Bryce would be at his corporate office this morning which was located in Old Town Alexandria. James walked into the lobby of Bryce’s office, and the receptionist let Bryce know that James was there to see him. James sat down to wait. He noticed that the walls were covered with pictures of students performing martial arts, and there was a large curio cabinet showcasing trophies from competitions. In addition, there were several plaques on the wall from local civic organizations and charities thanking, “The Decker Martial Arts Company” for their financial contributions and good deeds. If those organizations knew about Bryce’s deals with the devil and the seedy underground world he inhabits, they would never want anything to do with him again . . . The guy is so underhanded and slick, he should run for national office . . . James thought as he waited for Bryce.“Mr. Decker will see you now. His office is straight back, at the end of the hall,” the receptionist said to James.

“Thank you,” James replied as he got up and walked toward Bryce’s office.

“James, what brings you here?” Bryce asked as he stood up and greeted him with a handshake.

“Hello, Bryce. I’ve got a problem, and I’d like to talk to you about getting some help,” he answered while returning Bryce’s handshake . . . Damn his office is nice; black leather furniture, large mahogany desk, a great view of the Potomac River, a sofa and wet bar.

“Have a seat and let’s talk,” Bryce said, motioning to James to sit down in a nearby chair as he closed the door. “What’s the problem?”

“I’ve been having an affair with a waitress at American Steak for almost a year. She informed me that she’s pregnant with my child. She got pregnant to trap me. She admitted that she stopped taking her birth control pills on purpose. She claims that she loves me and that she hasn’t fooled around with anyone else. She refuses to have an abortion, and I don’t want a kid. She trapped me, deceived me, and I want your help to make her disappear so I can have my life back,” James said in a defensive and self-righteous manner.

Bryce was disturbed at this request. He had no problems getting rid of people. He had no problem playing the middleman and arranging hits for a fee. However, to have a woman killed while knowing that she was pregnant was especially distasteful to him, and he didn’t want any part of it. The expression on Bryce’s face indicated that he was not amenable to this, and James felt his stomach start to churn . . . I overestimated Bryce . . . I don’t think he wants to help with this.

“You know that I have no qualms taking out anyone who doesn’t pay their debts. I give them ample time to comply and get the money. I have no issues with arranging hits for a fee. However, arranging a hit on a pregnant woman or a child under 18 is not something I would ever do; not knowingly anyway. Who is this woman?” he asked with a look of utter disgust, narrowing his eyes and wanting to take a swing at James for even thinking something like this. Bryce had a soft spot for children, pregnant women, and animals.

“Her name is Amber Conner. She’s a waitress at American Steak,” James replied nervously, suddenly feeling extremely uncomfortable and thinking he made the wrong decision in asking for Bryce’s help.

Bryce immediately flinched. He was stunned and speechless for a few seconds. He loved Amber. She was his favorite cousin, and he would take her side no matter what. He glared at James without saying anything, and James suddenly wanted to bolt from the chair and run out of his office as fast as he could. He knew he made a mistake in coming to Bryce with this request. Bryce knew how to keep his cool, and even though he wanted to strangle James and throw his body in the river, he figured it would be better to force James into marrying Amber and supporting the baby.

“Amber Conner is my cousin, a first cousin,” Bryce stated coldly.

I’m a dead man . . . “I didn’t know that,” James replied sheepishly . . . He’s probably going to kill me now . . . Amber and I never talked about our families.

Excerpt from Tough Karma:  A Race Against Time

Drifting off to sleep later that night, he relaxed and focused on leaving his body. He welcomed the familiar buzzing sound followed by a state of body paralysis and then the light, floating feeling enabling his astral body to sit up, get off the bed and walk through the wall into her room. Standing over her bed, he projected a field of white light around her sleeping body. On the astral plane, anything you think about can instantly materialize, so you need to be in a good mental state and in control of your thoughts before attempting it. It started as a weak transmission and gradually became stronger and brighter as he focused more intently on creating it. He sent loving thoughts to her and discovered that it made him feel good too. He generated this field around her for about fifteen minutes and walked back to his room, reentering his physical body and succumbing to a normal sleep state. A few hours later he woke up to find her naked in his bed, thinking he was James, and wanting to have sex with him.

“James, wake-up, you have to do me,” she whispered in his ear, pressing her naked body against the back of him and wrapping her arms around him in a spoon position. “Wakey, wakey, and do your wifey.”

Sitting up and turning to look at her, he saw she was completely naked and smiling, “You are a sexy man, come on, James, do me,” she said seductively, reaching for his privates. He liked to sleep in a pair of boxers.

Catching her hand before she could touch them he said, “Wake up! I’m not James,” and she continued staring at him.

Sulking, she said with a sigh, “You’re no fun anymore; I guess I’ll just sleep next to you then.”

“Do that. I need to get some sleep tonight,” he replied annoyed because the sight of her was exciting him and turning back over on his side to where the front of his body would not be in direct contact with hers. She cuddled up and put her arms around him in a spoon position. He held her hands to keep her from reaching below his waist. He was unable to fall back asleep and laid there in the dark trying to distract his mind. He wanted her, yet was too honorable to take advantage of the situation.

She began snoring after a few minutes, and he got out of bed, picking her up and carrying her back to her room. Her nightgown and panties were strewn across the floor, and he put them back on her . . . No one would believe this. I’m putting clothes ON a beautiful, naked woman, who crawled into my bed! He placed her back in bed, pulling up the covers and thinking the whole situation was funny. He watched her sleeping for a few moments, kissed her lightly on the cheek, and left the room. Walking back to his room he laughed thinking . . . What’s next? Is she going to sleepwalk every night? Was that a result of the white light?

Eventually, he fell back to sleep, missing the next episode. About two hours later she took her notebook and a few pencils and walked downstairs to the living room. Sitting on the sofa, she drew a picture of Belle, Mike’s angry face from her dream, and a strange, dreadful picture of two people, a man and a woman, dressed in clothing from another century lying dead on the ground with a dead horse on top of them. When she finished these drawings, she left the notebook on the sofa and trekked upstairs to her room, falling back into a normal sleep.

Q&A’s with Laura Simmons:

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

I’ve wanted to be an author from the time I was a little girl, and I’ve always loved reading. It was the first thing I can ever remember telling people I wanted to do when I grow up, “I’m going to write a book!”

What is your writing process? For instance, do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

My first step is to write out my thoughts in a brainstorming session, which is really just paragraphs and not a formal outline. After I get the general plot for the story out of my head and into a Word document, then I start asking questions about the main characters motivations for the good and bad things they will do to each other. Once I have this established, then I write a very rough outline or timeline of how the story will evolve. When I feel that I have enough material to start with, I begin writing the chapters. I write whatever comes through. I might breeze through the first chapter, get stuck on the second chapter, quit for several days and then go back and write a chapter intended for much later in the story. I find that reading over what I have already written stimulates my mind and new ideas come through which enable me to keep writing and fill in the missing sections.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I have a full time day job which is spent at a desk in an office. I enjoy and look forward to working out when I get home. Once I sufficiently exhaust myself, I like to take a shower and then spend the rest of the evening writing some of my next novel or reading a book. My husband and I look forward to spending a week at the beach every September where we can truly unwind and relax from everything.

Excerpt:

Every night a man appeared from the recesses of her mind as if he was waiting for sleep to claim her. She couldn’t see his features fully, yet he was the epitome of sensuality, of male magnetism and allure. They never touched, yet her skin burned as if he’d run his fingers across her flesh; her lips tingled as if a kiss as light as air had landed on them. He teased her in her dreams and she yearned for him.

She’d wake in the morning, frustrated and horny and no closer to discovering who was haunting her dreams. She figured her dreams were being invaded, but couldn’t work out how or why. Her ability was visions. She could touch a person and catch a glimpse of their future. Sometimes she could see the past from touching inanimate objects. The dreams were way different from anything she’d ever seen or done before. Yet somehow, they were connected. She just needed to figure out how.

First Witch
Book 2

Sometimes being a psychic vampire can, well, suck. And since Georgia was turned by her sexy hybrid boyfriend Zak, she’s been wallowing in regret. But when her long absent Aunt turns up on her doorstep, convinced that Georgia is a witch, she has to pull herself together.

In the meantime, the Witch Hunter has woken and he wants nothing more than to obliterate every last witch from the planet. Starting with Georgia and her Aunt. His plan of attack? Take control of Zak’s body.

Zak not being himself has put a serious crimp in her sex life, but there are other things to consider, like how to create the mother of all spells that will immobilize the Hunter – and save a coven of witches. To find the answers she seeks and recover what she’s lost will take all of Georgia’s courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins, but she’s up to the challenge.

First Witch is the second book in Jane Hinchey’s paranormal romantic suspense series, Awakening. If you like sexy vampires, sultry witches, and kickass action, you’re going to love First Witch.

Excerpt:

“Let’s mix it up, Eddie.” Georgia pointed to a bottle behind him. “This calls for whiskey.”

“You sure?” He turned and reached for the bottle and a fresh glass. Piling ice into the bottom, he poured a double shot.

“Absolutely,” she assured him. The tequila had given her a nice buzz, had taken the edge off her angst, although the headache still thrummed behind her eyes. The one she’d been hiding from Zak because for one, he’d fuss, and two, vampires didn’t get headaches. Something was wrong with her.

First Blood
Book 3

Pregnancy isn’t easy when your baby daddy is a crazy overprotective angel-vampire hybrid and there’s a kidnapper on the loose.

Georgia Pearce is with child, carrying a baby destined to begin the next generation of powerful witches. As if a mysterious prophecy and a new (dysfunctional) family wasn’t enough to deal with, all of Georgia’s hard work to rebuild her coven is ruined when witches start vanishing.

Georgia investigates, only to find that the kidnapper has ties to her lover Zak Goodwin, and is more family than foe. He has big plans to turn the planet into heaven on earth, though his idea of heaven resembles hell more than paradise. The only one standing in his way? Georgia.

As she fights to bring this dark angel down, she dives deeper and deeper into Zak’s forgotten past. The romance between them sparks and ignites, only to explode into a fire no one sees coming. Even Georgia’s powers aren’t enough to stop the evil that seeks to destroy her and her child. Has her magic finally met its match?

The most suspenseful and shocking book in the Awakening series yet, First Blood is a hot and sexy urban fantasy full of action, magic, shifters, and adventure. This paranormal romance by author Jane Hinchey is certain to leave readers breathless.

Excerpt:

Skye opened her mouth to speak, then froze. They both heard it. A scraping noise outside. Like a boot on gravel. Was someone out there? Pushing her senses out, Georgia tried to read the area but got nothing. Skye was looking at her, eyebrows raised, and she shook her head. She had a feeling someone was outside, but she couldn’t say for sure and she couldn’t pinpoint just who or what was out there. She didn’t have to wait long to find out. The front door exploded and before she could so much as blink, icy cold fingers wrapped around her arm and began dragging her out of her chair.

She made him her fledging, a slave for her dark, evil purposes—hunting humans. After a few years she released him, and Nathan reluctantly learned to accept the cursed life she’d foisted upon him.

Over time he amassed a great fortune, which today has made him famous worldwide. Isabella decides she wants to be a part of this world of fame and fortune Nathan created for himself. She’s determined to marry him, and love has nothing to do with it. His money is her primary target, and the fame and prestige attached to being the wife of one of the richest men in the world wouldn’t be so bad either.

In an effort to evade her until he can figure out how to stop her, he hides at a safe house he owns in New Orleans. One Saturday evening in NOLA, he decides to have dinner in the city. He chooses a quiet little Italian bistro, never imagining this night will change his life forever. The human woman who delivers his order isn’t a server, but the restaurant’s sous chef, a beautiful ethnic woman possessing the most delicious blood scent he’s ever encountered.

The moment Mia Peebles arrives at his table with his plate, tasting her becomes
an obsession. Mia wants nothing to do with him because of Nathan’s reputation as a playboy. So Nathan enchants her, feeds from her, but his lusts for her blood and body play havoc with his thinking.

Nathan finds a way to bring her into his life as his personal chef and quickly falls in love with her. The trouble is Mia has no idea he’s a vampire because during the enchanting episodes, Nathan blocked her memories of those sensual encounters.

How will Nathan tell her the truth without losing her and keep Isabella from finding him? Or worst yet, will Isabella discover how much Mia has come to mean to him?

Excerpt:

“You’re having a very late dinner.” Mia’s head shot up, her gaze slashing toward her right. The speaker was that drop-dead-gorgeous man she’d delivered the one top order to earlier, and he was standing beside her holding a glass of wine.

She swallowed the bite in her mouth and said, “This tends to be my normal dinner hour. How was your dinner?”

She was surprised to still find him here but not unusual she supposed. Tavania’s was one of the tamer establishments here on Bourbon Street. Guests, whether single or in a group, often came here to eat, hook up to Wi-Fi and work, or just hang out in a nonparty atmosphere.

“Amazing, actually. You’re a talented chef.” He took up residence on the stool next to her and sat his glass on the bar.

Mia noticed him studying her. His eyes, the most beguiling she’d ever seen, held intrigue. She felt a little unnerved by his perusal, but she chalked it up to a customer desiring to speak to the chef. It happened all the time. Mostly with Joe because he was head chef. Happy guests often asked to speak to him. She had a roll to play. So play it she would. Mia pushed aside her plate and smiled.

“I’m Mia Peebles. Is this your first time at Tavania’s?” She extended her hand.

He gave it a cordial shake. “Yes. I drove by tonight and decided it might be a quiet place to do some work. Not so much, but I managed to accomplish what I needed to. I’m Nathan Davenport.”

Mia laughed. “Yes, it was a bit crazy tonight. It’s good to meet you, Nath—” She broke off and glared at him. Her heart did a little trip over in her chest when her brain cells began to fire and comprehend the name the man had given her. “Oh my god,” she breathed.

Suddenly, his features began to morph with the memories of numerous news and other TV show interviews she’d witnessed over the last ten years or so. Nathan Davenport was a real estate mogul and currently the richest man in the United States and possibly worldwide. Also the most sought-after bachelor on the planet. A playboy. He had a different supermodel or Hollywood starlet on his arm every other picture or interview taken of him.

He looked amused. “I guess you know who I am.”

“Duh.” She laughed, picked up her glass of wine, and sipped. “My biggest question is, how did you end up here? I thought you lived in New York.”

“I do primarily, but I have a number of homes, and one of my favorites is here in New Orleans in the heart of one of the historical districts. Circumstances have brought me to the city. Unfortunately, I don’t have a private chef here, just a housekeeper, so I went out for the evening.”

Mia blinked at him. A private chef ? Wow! Of course a man like him would have all sort of household and personal staff. Her background was redneck, Missouri rural. Just having food on the table every day for her ex-husband and children had been a miracle of God for many years. That kind of wealth stymied her. In her four years with Joe, she’d had many encounters with well-to-do folk and had learned to accept and accommodate their eccentricities. Not every wealthy patron she’d met were all up in their stuff, but she suspected Nathan Davenport about as spoiled as a rich person could get.

“What?” he demanded, grinning at her.

“Nothing. Just glad you happened by tonight and enjoyed your meal. And truly, I hope you’ll visit Tavania’s again.” She tried for a kind smile then stood, intending to take her half-eaten plate and wine glass to the dish pit.

He laid a hand on her arm, halting her. “Are you finished for the evening?”

Mia’s smile faded. There was a hungry look in his eyes, which had nothing to do with food, and she didn’t like the implications. “No. I’m closing tonight and have another hour or so ahead of me. Why?”

“I was going to ask you if you’d like to have a drink with me when you’re finished. I’d be happy to wait.”

His expression seemed polite enough. Maybe her thinking was a little harsh. He’d been completely cordial, but Mia was forty-two years old and wise enough to recognize a player when she saw one.

“That’s very kind of you, but no. It’s been an extremely long day, and I’m beat, but I appreciate the invite.”

He appeared disappointed, but Mia didn’t care. She hadn’t dated since her divorce. Hadn’t had time and certainly tonight, she had no time for a guy like Davenport. The man would have been a temptation for a nun. She’d lived like one for the last five years because work left her no time for a social life. However, she wasn’t thinking very sisterly thoughts at the moment, which solidified her refusal. That and the fact he was Nathan Davenport. Dating required commonalities. She couldn’t think of one they might share. She’d taken several steps away from the bar when she heard him speak.

Mia, look at me. His voice had taken on a deep hypnotic tone, which seemed to echo in her head. In fact, it seemed to only be in her head, not audible. The strangeness of that reality should have been terrifying, yet something compelled her to turn and face him. She sat her dishes on the bar.

“Come with me.” He gave her a kind, reassuring smile.

She opened her mouth to say, Hell, no, but the word that came out instead was, “Okay.”

Her heart tumbled over in her chest. Mia realized she was seriously losing it because she allowed him to escort her out the front door of the restaurant without a peep. As hard as she tried to get her feet to obey her mind’s order to run back inside the restaurant, they were useless. They just kept taking her the direction he led them. Her voice was useless too. Her jaws felt locked.

PBAV Teaser 2

Excerpt:

“It’s up to you, Elvis.” Lincoln, the dealer, nodded in my direction and waited. I kept my gaze trained on the center of the table where chips sat in a small pile. I didn’t need to look at my cards again. I knew what I had: an eight and a queen of hearts.
There were six vampires at the table, counting both Gage and me. Gage had folded right after the deal, and so had one of the other players. I was the last to bet, and sometimes I liked to spice things up a bit, so I matched the bet and sat back.
Heavy smoke hung in the air like delicate streams of fog, swirling in circled patterns under the light hanging from a long cord above the table. Four other lamps hung on fixtures attached to the otherwise stark, tawny brown walls. Even with all the bulbs, the room seemed dark.
Maybe it was the darkness of the souls in the room. I wasn’t sure.
A droning sound buzzed from outside. It was a little annoying, but I managed to drown it out as I nonchalantly watched the faces around the table as the dealer placed the three cards of the flop face-up, revealing a nine of hearts. He slowly separated them, sliding the top card off the nine to reveal a jack of hearts.
      Holy fuck!
It was raining hearts for some reason, and I held two of them already. I held my breath, waiting to see the third card in the flop. The dealer slid the jack over. Crap, an eight of diamonds.
Not exactly what I was looking for, but a pair of eights with a queen high wasn’t completely a loss so I decided to hang in there and see if one more heart would show. There were still two cards to go, and a flush was possible.
I kept my eyes straight, my thoughts blank—or I tried—like I usually did as each card was revealed, always attempting to keep my composure, never deviating from the norm, not wanting to give away my emotions. I was an expert at reading people. Especially in a poker game. A blink of an eye, a slight twitch, a swallow, the slightest movement, anything . . . different could give someone’s hand away. I wanted to reach up and finger my shades that sat on top of my head. Just one little nudge and they’d be sitting comfortably on my face, shielding my eyes. But not only were dark glasses frowned upon in this high-stakes game of Texas Hold ’em, but any movement out of the ordinary might tip someone off about my cards.
This wasn’t our normal gathering with my brothers at the mansion. This was a high roller, unsanctioned but heavily guarded poker game with some seriously high-powered city officials that I’d bet my right nut were a drug cartel of some sort or another. The two thugs in the monkey suits positioned on either side of the door to the entrance had stood like statues most of the night; the bulge of a holster protruding from under their jackets an obvious clue. At least they were on the outside of the room, but they still remained at the ready if their services were required.
Gage and I didn’t normally seek out games with such high stakes, but he’d been bored lately, and when he ran into Lincoln—the game’s host—at Club Royal a couple of weeks ago, Lincoln had invited Gage and me to join. Said they’d recently lost two of their regulars and needed a couple of fill-ins.
When Gage had approached me, I shrugged him off at first, not wanting any part of something that sounded so sketchy. But after he’d pestered me for the entire week, I finally gave in, needing a distraction from the long hours—sometimes days—apart from Lily, the sexy and sweet vampire I’d been trying to get to know better. Except, for the past few months, she was either playing hard to get, or just wasn’t that interested in me. Though I had a difficult time believing the latter of those two options since she continued to meet me whenever she had the time or, in her words, “could get away.” Away from what, I hadn’t been able to find out. Yet.
Getting thoughts of Lily off my mind was nearly impossible. Her fair, silky-smooth skin; her mesmerizing dark coffee eyes that could hold my gaze for hours on end; the tips of her long, thick locks kissing the cleavage of her breasts where my lips longed to skim. I managed to clear my head just in time, as it was my turn to bet again. I slid my bet forward, raising the pot three thousand for appearance’s sake. In truth, without another heart or a ten, I had squat. I didn’t think the pair of eights would cut it. I had an excellent chance for a straight or a flush if either of the next two cards went my way. Since Gage had already folded, he sat still as a statue beside me, his hands together on the edge of the table. I knew he was busting a gut wondering what I held in my hand.
There were only four of us left in this hand, and I didn’t want to go home with a loss. Not against these guys. Two of them sat puffing on brown cigarettes, looking rather tough. They were tough, the sort who would drain the blood from a homeless person and leave them to die in the gutter without so much as a “thank you, ma’am.” Particularly, the one at the end with the light brown, wool Stetson on his head. The word dangerous exuded from his pores. He wore that hat pulled low on his brow, shading his eyes just enough to where it was legal but not enough to reveal much about him. A neatly trimmed goatee graced his chin and upper lip. A long ponytail made of cornrow braids hung down his back. He seemed on edge, or maybe it was just an act to throw me off.
Which he did when he raised another five thousand. That was steep. Not that I didn’t have the money. These days, my bank account overflowed, but it wasn’t that way in the beginning. I hadn’t always been the man I was today, and money hadn’t been abundant back then. The circumstances surrounding my rebirth as a vampire weren’t something I would likely forget, though I’d never spoken about them, not even to Gage. The way I’d been turned hadn’t exactly been conventional vampire behavior and had left an ache in my soul I didn’t understand and an emptiness that I could never satisfy.
I peeked at my cards and considered the raise. Either the guy had something powerful, or he was bluffing his ass off and had nothing. Since I had the queen of hearts, I knew he couldn’t have a royal flush. But that didn’t rule out a straight or four of a kind. The bald-headed guy next to him folded, as did the next two. Now it was up to me, and six thousand was just about all I had left in chips, so I shoved the entire stack I had into the middle of the table.
“I’m all in,” I said with feigned confidence.
After the bet had been matched, the dealer flipped the fourth card.
      A fucking nine of spades.
      Shit.
I watched out of the corner of my eye as cowboy hat’s mouth curved up on one side, the tip of his fang biting into his lower lip. Could mean he was nervous. Or cocky. Either way, my hand was dead unless a ten or another heart showed up.
My heart skipped a beat when the fifth card was flipped over. There it was, sparkling as if someone had lit it on fire. I managed to keep my composure as I chilled, though I could have sworn I heard fireworks go off outside.
      The beautiful ten of hearts.

Playing with Fire

by Clare Meyers & Cris Meyers

51qE0iSS3OL._SY346_An interesting beginning to a new series.

Magic, shapeshifting and crime all blend together to make this enjoyable read by husband and wife team, Cris and Clare Meyers.

Talented thief, Renee and her partner, Stone, join a trio of shapeshifters, Rook, Carlos and Grace, to steal a magical gem, and take revenge against the man who set them up on a previous job.
But in their line of work, nothing is quite what it seems.

Although the book is much more about the planning and the action, I did enjoy getting acquainted with the characters and hope to get to know them better in the next book of the series.

Loner Renee Devereaux is a thief with a lot to hide, and trust is a risk she rarely takes. Stone Anders is a mercenary and hitman, but being a hired killer isn’t fitting like it used to. But while they are criminals, they are anything but common. Renee and Stone are Talents, and their supernatural powers give them an edge in a high stakes business where one wrong move could be their last.

It’s always just one job, and everyone scatters—sometimes in less than favorable circumstances. For Renee and Stone, that’s business as usual. But things change.

A chance at revenge draws Renee and Stone into a job they know they shouldn’t take. The job: Steal a dangerous magical artifact before it can be used. Along with the deadline, they’ll have to deal with a loudmouth hacker with problematic connections, a rookie who still believes in ‘right’ and ‘wrong,’ and a professional liar with a cat’s curiosity.

Worse, something just doesn’t feel right.

But this is their job. They have a reputation to maintain, a paycheck to earn, and a score to settle…

Fly by Night

by Clare Meyers & Cris Meyers

31925656The ‘gang’ from book 1, Playing with Fire, are back. They’ve moved on from the events in Seattle, but they haven’t forgotten, or forgiven.

This, the second book in the series is told from Rooks point of view and is a superb sequel.
Rook never knows when to keep his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself, which makes for some great moments. Half the time I wanted to gag him, the rest of the time I wanted to hug him!

The characters all evolve and grow in their own ways, during the story, and we learn more about them, their past and their relationships.

The plot is well thought out, and this book has more action and suspense than the previous one.

I enjoyed Playing with Fire… I loved Fly by Night!

The game has changed.

Rook is a wisecracking hacker, a shapeshifter who prefers the name ‘were-crow,’ and former underling to a Talented crime boss. But as supernatural powers go, he’s no heavy hitter.

After a job blew up in his face, Rook thought the worst thing he’d have to deal with was criminal unemployment. But when he starts losing his mind to mysterious voices, being broke takes a backseat. And once his apartment goes up in smoke, Rook knows he’s in trouble.

Out of his depth and trying to dig his way out of a hole not entirely of his own making, Rook must put his survival—and his sanity—in the hands of people who have their own mysterious reasons for helping him.

With trust in short supply and time ticking down, Rook will need to find a way to make this uneasy alliance work before even more of his life goes up in flames.

Code Wolf

by C.D. Gorri

34747449 I really enjoyed this new book from C.D. Gorri.

As with her previous books, it’s set in ‘Grazi Kelly’s world’. This one, however, is definitely not YA!

I loved learning more about Randall, and his unexpected love interest, Tulla, along with Tulla’s special son, Danny.
The book is well-written, easy to read and hard to put down. The descriptive writing allows you to join the fleshed out characters on their adventures.

“He never thought of himself as a family man, but sometimes things changed… ”

Randall Graves spends most of his time writing lines of code in his air-conditioned office at Macconwood Manor. He’d rather be alone than risk involvement of any kind. Everything was going fine, until his Alpha sends him on a forced vacation.

It’s all good with Randall, as long as there’s WIFI at the small, beachfront, bed and breakfast in Bloody Point, South Carolina. He could work and get some sun at the same time, but he wasn’t counting on Tulla Nirvelli. The beautiful single mother owned and operated the small B &B with her seven-year old son.

Charmed by the small island and the young family, Randall finds himself enjoying his time at the Sea Mist Bed & Breakfast. When trouble starts brewing for Tulla and her son, Randall is ready to jump in, but that means revealing his secret. Will she accept the truth about him?

The Name of Death

by Joshua Robertson

33636392 I enjoyed this short story from Joshua Robertson.

It was a well-written and entertaining read.
The characters were fairly well fleshed out for such a short tale.

A good introduction to the authors writing and to the world in his novels, which I look forward to reading.

Drada Koehn is a fearless, formidable fighter ensnared in a presaged war against the northern humans. When the Speaker foretells their victory upon discovery of the name of death, she sets out to unravel the mysterious prophecy. Now, bound by duty and honor, Drada faces untold horrors with her companions, searching for what may never be found. In a story of unexpected twists, she soon finds that her resolve to see the quest done will be the fortune or doom of her people.

Dark Legends

32721381 I enjoyed quite a few of the books in this set and will be looking to read other books by some of the authors.

If you like stories with Dragons, Ghosts, Mermaids, Shifters, Vampires, Witches… and much more, you’re bound to find a story in here that you enjoy.

Some of the stories worked well as standalone reads, while others were obviously part of a series.

As a bunch of the books were steamy (one or two more steam than story) this is definitely an adult only box set.

All in all, this collection of books was good value and a great way to find ‘new-to-me’ authors.

This Collection is packed with more than 20 full-length Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance reads from New York Times, USA Today, and International Bestselling Authors!

Don’t miss this collection of more than twenty unique twists in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, providing over one million words of supernatural suspense that will transport you to new worlds with smoking hot action and heart-throttling adventure!

The DARK LEGENDS boxed set includes: Mermaids, Sirens, Shifters, Vampires, Dragons, Sorcerers, Warriors, Angels, Faeries, Demons, Witches, Psychics, Ghosts, Mythology, Folk Tales, Legends, Dark Magic, Time Travel, and More!
