VIRUS

“Well, that’s it. Now we wait again,” Maria announced.

Phil watched her sit at a cluttered desk to scribble yet more failure notes. But his eyes did not linger. He scanned the laboratory. It might be the last time he’d see it. Beds lined the walls of the spacious room, all but hiding its sterile, white-tiled floor. “How long until we see results this time — if any?” he asked.

“Same as the others. Twelve hours.”

“That doesn’t give us much time to administer a vaccine.”

“No. And — yes, before you say it, you’re right — there’s no guarantee we’ll ever find an acceptable vaccine.”

On each bed lay a test subject. Even those that had succumbed remained, since the examination of their rotting bodies still offered the faint hope of a cure.

But Phil knew that the virus had won this war. There was no hope. Eight months of this, and nothing but 665. The committee was right.
Phil turned his face away from the rotting, deformed victims, and stared at his co-worker. It was time to tell her, although he knew how she’d react. Maria was obstinate — so certain she’d find a cure.

Phil walked to his colleague’s desk. Each step weighed heavily on him, like the weight they’d shouldered as a team these past few months. He rested his hand on her shoulder.

“Maria?” he whispered.

Her eyes shimmered. “Yes?”

Phil blinked and spoke. “The committee decided if this last trial is unsuccessful, they’ll go with 665. They’ve already begun to manufacture.”

“What? You’re joking?”

“They say there’s no more time to be choosey. It’s 665 or total annihilation.”

“Choosey! Don’t they realise what will happen? 665 has such awful side effects.”

“Sorry. Maybe choosey was the wrong word, and yes, they know the peril. I agree with them. What other choice do we have?”

“I’d rather die.”

Phil turned and looked at the bed beside him. Clear plastic sheeting did nothing to hide its demonic deformities. IT was the only way to describe this once-person. Its new facial appearance removed any identification of what sex, race or age test subject 665 once had.

More to come…

Why I wrote this book?

I never thought of myself a someone with a dark side. I always thought of my flash fictions as scifi, thriller maybe a little creepy. But then I was a guest on a podcast and the host made me realise that, a lot of what I do write does fall into the horror genre. And so I decided to take out some of the best horror flash from my two collections Heads & Tales and Undressed and make this small collection for those that don’t mind sleeping at night.
Enjoy.

First Sight

Joe was a homicide cop working a case. He had no idea something would happen today that would change his life. Unfortunately, it would happen when he had a mouth full of doughnut.
Kathy awoke and as she did every morning, threw on joggers, T-shirt and sneakers, grabbed a bottle of water and headed for Central Park. She too was oblivious that today was the day when everything would change.
The call came shortly before 6am. Joe grabbed his coat.
A man had shot out from behind some bushes at 5.10am and grabbed a female jogger. She had no time to scream as he launched a brutal attack. It would be wrong to call him a man because no true man would do what he did.
Joe got there in time to preserve the crime scene. “Get these people outta here” He barked. This was bad, and he was thankful they couldn’t see what he’d seen. It didn’t help when it rained.
“Joe,” a cop in uniform approached. “We have a witness.”
“Where?” The cop pointed to a brunette who had her hands on her cheeks. “She all right?” Joe asked.
       “She’s in shock.”
       “She sees the body?”
       He nodded.
“Okay, get the medics to check her over then get her down to the station.”
“Right.” The cop nodded and left.
Kathy sat in a room full of cops working other cases. She’d been given coffee but hadn’t touched it. Today was a day she wanted to begin again. She didn’t know the something that would change her life hadn’t happened yet.
Joe picked up doughnuts on the way back to the station. He poured coffee from the percolator in the corner, shoved a doughnut in his mouth, picked up a manila folder and headed for his desk.
The moment, that one moment that would define their future was about to happen.
He arrived at his desk, the doughnut still in his mouth and stopped with surprise.
Kathy’s hair was still wet as was her tear-stained face and with haunted eyes, she looked up. For a moment – that moment, their eyes locked. Kathy touched her hair and Joe dropped the doughnut in his hand. Their fate was sealed. Joe had met Kathy.
       “The witness?” he asked.
       “The cop?” she replied.
“Yes, ma’am. Sorry to have kept you waiting.” He offered his hand then wiped it on his trousers and offered it to her again.
And that was it. The one defining moment that would change their lives forever.
Of course, love, at first sight, is reserved for works of fiction. In real life, the process takes a little longer. Here, it had already been triggered.
They say out of something bad, comes something good. Kathy’s testimony put away a killer, and the image haunted her would be eased by Joe’s gentle touch and his penchant for doughnuts.

Excerpt:

Setting off on the path behind the house he climbed the small hill to his favoured location. From the one side the town was laid out before him, the other was the rugged cliff line leading to the lighthouse. The sun was starting to turn the horizon orange, so he settled on the grass, the lighthouse in view. He watched as the light bathed its white shell pink and then orange. Taking a few shots, he waited until the sun was diving into the ocean and the colours turned to violets before dark. Then shifting into the other direction, the moon began its ascent, lighting the midnight sky with its stark white light. Once more the lighthouse was white, topped by the bright yellow light of the lamp. Sebastian loved this time of day when he got to indulge his other love after sailing. Then lying back in the grass, he closed his eyes and thought of Lena.

As his boat bumped the side of the yacht he lurched forward and jumped. The two of them landed, face down, in a sluice of water on the deck.

“I like how the author draws the reader in to her story. I felt as if I was witnessing what the writer was talking about. Some stories were more eerie than others but they each felt real,” says a reviewer.

Excerpt:

From Steps of a Killer

The man’s companion got up and I heard him say, “Thanks for the coffee.” My eyes burned into the side of the killer’s head. He glances around as he raised the cup to his mouth.
My blood boiled. How dare he just sit there and act normally! He thinks no one knows what he had done but he is wrong. I know! I couldn’t help myself as I stood and moved over to his table to sat in the empty seat. He looked surprised as I said nothing.
“Can I help you?” he asked sounding like a regular guy. Normal voice open expression, friendly even.
Seb was going to be annoyed. He says I’m a loose cannon and unable to contain my feelings. He’s right. I shouldn’t be taking risks like this.
“I know,” I said quietly.
He stared at me and says, “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.”
I wish I could throw the fabric I still have clutched in my fist at him, asking if he remembers it, but because of where it came from, I can’t.
“Yes, you do. I can see it in your eyes.”
He continued to stare, and I could hear the sound of him breathing. “I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
“No, I haven’t. I know who you are, or rather what you are.”
His Adam’s apple bobs. “And what’s that?”
I looked around. “Do you want me to say it out loud?”
He leaned forward and I flinched as my back pressed into the chair. In a whisper, he said, “You’re crazy, I don’t know you.”
As his breath washed over me, I realised she wasn’t the first one he’s killed.

Good news, for (a few) authors.

Ramblings from a Writer's Mind

01We live in an ever-changing world, one where change is happening at ever increasing speed.

The truth of the old adage which says, “If you stand still long enough you’ll end up going backwards” has never been so evident.

This competitive hunger for transformation is affecting all areas of the publishing world, from the major players like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, to Random House, Harper Collins and Hachette Livre.

Amazon_Books_logo

It is no surprise then, this onslaught of rapid change is influencing and shaping the future of the indie author and writer markets in ways never seen before.

The warning is, most writers are, stuck in their ways.

Too many indie authors have become comfortable and clearly reliant on the way they have been publishing, promoting and marketing their books over the past years. Free book giveaways, quickfire sales, time-limited discounts, paying for a service to give their…

Books2Read

Excerpt:

Damien and Daniel were very much alike, and I much preferred Damien, which was just as well, really. Their look and build were so similar they could have been twins, but they weren’t.

Rachel was saying, “Every encounter I’ve had with her has been on the stairs or the landing. I even heard her name whispered. That’s why I knew it. I couldn’t believe it when you said it out loud, Cassie. Have you come across something like this before?”

The waitress arrived and took our orders. When she left, they looked at me expectantly.

“Nothing surprises me anymore. Your ghost seems intent on reliving the day she died. She was a slave brought into the country and then someone killed her.”

Rachel gasped, Daniel and Damien appeared sceptical and Damien said, “Come on, how can you possibly know that…”

“I saw someone at the top of the stairs, they moved away as I looked up.”

“They’re not real, y’know,” Damien said.

Rachel answered him. “Then how do you explain what happened?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know, it’s just bizarre.”

“It is.” I agreed.

“Well, I’m sorry,” Rachel said, emphatically. “There is no way I’m moving in with her walking up and down the stairs like that.”

Daniel huffed, his eyes gazing heavenwards with expirations. “This is going well!”

“So, what’s next?” Rachel asked, looking at me. Her large eyes blinked several times, and I think she expected me to perform a miracle.

“All I can tell you is what you already know. The house is haunted. I don’t know if I can stop it if that’s what you’re expecting.”

“Karen J Mossman manages something quite unique. This is a story that will make you laugh and scare you at the same time.”

“Cassie came to me one night and the following morning I wrote a short story. I found myself really liking her, she was funny, sassy, and had a great relationship with her brother. Two more stories followed and I ended up with four stories which I put into a book and called in The Adventures of Cassidy Newbold.

I was then challenged to write a short story featuring a hot male and motor sport of some kind. So I decided to make it a Cassie Newbold story.”

Toxic by Karen J Mossman and Karina Kantas

Toxic banner

Two authors, two versions of the same book in two exciting genres of fiction.

Karen J Mossman and Karina Kantas present, Toxic.

ToxicLexi isn’t your normal Malok. She craves adventure and freedom from the mundane life forced upon her. 100 years ago, the first drop of acid rain fell. Maloks fled to the mountains, building a new way of life—a desolate life—a life Lexi knows all too well.

Lexi has a plan, her ticket out of this miserable existence, becoming a ranger. Aron, her partner, believes she’s not strong enough to fight alongside him. Lexi will stop at nothing, no matter what the danger, to achieve her independence, even if that means defying him.

Amidst everything, Marcus, Lexi’s childhood best friend makes a sudden return. Before she can rejoice in a reunion, her happiness is crushed when she sees Mae, the bully that had terrorized her in her teens. Marcus was aware of the mental abuse Lexi had suffered and yet the person she loved and the person she hated the most, stand before her, together.

“A powerful dystopian thriller that captures the heart and imagination”.

“A romantic, thrilling read…..Karen dares to challenge relationships bringing them together in troubled times….thougthful and though- provoking.”

Toxic by Karen J Mossman

Toxic -Erotic“A sensual, erotic read…Karina dares to figure out the nature of passion…thoughtful and thought-provoking.”

“It was a pleasure to read an erotic story that had an actual plot. The genre itself is probably the most misunderstood. The plot drives an erotic story and the sex just adds to the enticing nature of it. You’ve done a great job building a world for your reader.“

Toxic by Karina Kantas

“Toxic is based in a future world where acid rain forces the people, the Maloks to build their cities inside mountains for protection. What is also amazing is this book has two versions, the romantic and the erotic. In both books the story focuses on a female Malok called Lexi, who is determined to become a Ranger and help society guard against the Outcasts. Only Lexi has little support, even from her own boyfriend, Aron. Mix in a childhood sweetheart, in the shape of Marcus, and the unexpected arrival of Mae, Lexi’s childhood bully and things begin to get interesting. Toxic is the story of Lexi’s determination to satisfy her ambitions, both professionally and personally. The Erotic Toxic tells the same story but delves deeper into Lexi’s sexuality and passions. Whichever Toxic you chose, you find yourself living the fantasy.”

Excerpt:

“Lexi,” greeted the young medic.

“Hey, Sha.” Lexi smiled.

She walked past Sha and sat down on a stool, took a sterile cloth, and wiped away the dead skin, causing her to take an intake of breath. No matter how many times she had been burnt there was no way to get used to that kind of pain.

As she reached for a jar of Dozax paste, Sha spoke. “You’ve been outside again, haven’t you?”

Lexi didn’t answer at first, as she felt the wonderful relief as the paste went to work, taking away the pain and healing the burn. The skin immediately started to regenerate and within moments all that was left on her hand was a green coloured dye, which would eventually fade. Still, Lexi needed to wear a patch that had a tiny spot of Dozax cream to complete the treatment. It was dangerous for any Malok to use Dozax in its pure form. Everything had to be diluted.

“You are such a strange Malok,” Sha said, shaking her head.

Lexi smiled. “I can’t help it. I’d go crazy if I was cooped up here forever.”

“Has your ranger training started?” Sha asked.

Lexi’s grin was wide. “Not yet. At the end of the week,” she answered, still not believing she had been accepted into the academy. “Okay, I’m done,” she said and then jumped off the stool. “See you tomorrow.”

“Oh wait. You have four inoculations to do tomorrow.”

“Four?” Lexi questioned.

“Yes, some Maloks arrived last night with the new commander.”

“Oh, yes I forgot about Jow. So sad. He was nice as a commander, and so approachable and happy all the time, you know?”

“Yeah,” Sha agreed and then giggled. “Remember when he came and said he wanted to learn basic aid? Oh my, he was so funny.”

Lexi laughed as she remembered that day and how he always made her smile. “See even now, just thinking of the late commander makes us happy. He left a great legacy behind.”

“He sure did. Let’s just hope the new one can live up to that.”

“Okay, I’m off. See you tomorrow, Sha.”

“I will have the Dozax jabs ready for you in the incubator,” Sha called.

“Super! Thanks,” Lexi mumbled.

Lexi still couldn’t get that sad day out of her mind. She even had to visit the Charmer to talk and get closure. The loss of Commander Jow was hard for everyone. A party of fifteen went out that day and only two returned. Lexi wished for peace every day, but the only way that would happen was if the Outcasts and the Maloks agreed to share.

She shook her head. Of course, that would never happen, she was kidding herself. Outcasts needed the Terra leaves to feed their addiction. Never mind that this amazing plant could cure pain, protect the body from germs, Illness and normal medical problems that come from age and a weary body. She couldn’t imagine how life used to be when young people would die, because they didn’t know the secret of the plant and the properties it possessed. So, sad, she thought, as she quickly made her way back to the residence she shared with Aron.

Everyone assumed that Lexi and Aron would marry and settle down. Her friends certainly thought so, and at the start, so did Lexi. Only now she had woken up, and the adventurous Lexi wanted so much more from life and becoming a ranger was a step in the right direction.

“I was fascinated by Stephanie Meyer’s book The Host, where people lived in mountains. This was a world I wanted to explore as a setting for Toxic. Living in a close environment as this, there has to be rules. Those rules don’t always have to be fair. This gave me scope to add intrigue and animosity between my characters.”
