Strangers She Knows by Christina Dodd

strangers-she-knows-by-christina-dodd-coverI have three deadly problems:

1. I’ve seriously offended a maniacal killer.
2. I just had a bullet removed from my brain.
3. My new daughter is growing up too fast–and she’s in the line of fire.

Living on an obscure, technology-free island off California means safety from the murderer who hunts Kellen Adams and her new family…. Or does it? Family time becomes terror-time, and at last, alone, Kellen faces a killer playing a cruel game. Only one can survive, and Kellen knows who must win…and who must die.

My Review:

This, the third and final book of the Cape Charade series, works well as a standalone book as there is enough information for you to understand some of what has gone before. That being said I’m sure that reading the first two, would’ve given me more insight into the characters, their relationships and the circumstances leading up to the events in this book.

Max, Kellen and Rae Di Luca flee to a remote island to avoid being caught and killed by Mara Phillipi, a psychopath from a previous book, who has escaped from prison. They take with them a cook and their dog, Luna. The only other inhabitants on the almost deserted island are a husband and wife team of caretakers, and a friendly ‘ghost’.

With no way of communication with the outside world, apart from the radio in the helicopter they arrived in, it takes a while for the family to settle into their more relaxed way of life. They pass the time by exploring the island on bikes, and by reading the journal of one of the islands previous residents.

Mara finds them, wrecks the helicopter and drugs Rae, who Max has to take off the island in a small boat during a storm, leaving Kellen on the island to deal with the killer. The final showdown between the two women is tense and terrifying, with Kellen being at a disadvantage as she’s still recovering from brain surgery.

The book is a thrill ride, packed with action, suspense, and mystery. I’ve added the first two books of the series to my to-read list.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.)

strangers-she-knows-by-christina-dodd-coverWaves swamped the small vessel; Max and Rae disappeared from view, and Kellen found herself on her toes, straining and screaming at them to come back, come out. As if her shouts lifted the SkinnySail, the boat rose, wobbled at the top of the wave, and finally thrust itself out of the surf and into the rough, grey seas beyond.

Life, and Other Dreams by Richard Dee

Life, and Other Dreams

42948389Rick lives here on Earth now, with Cath. His life is boring, writing adverts for cat food and exotic holidays. When he’s asleep, he dreams vividly.

In his dreams, he lives as Dan, spending his time with his wife Vanessa. They live six-hundred years in the future, half a galaxy away. They’re explorers, searching for valuable minerals on Ecias, an alien paradise.

Dan has no dreams about Rick’s life, he lives on Ecias, loves his life and Vanessa.

When the two worlds overlap, Rick starts to question what is real. Events in his waking and sleeping lives are mirrored, similar people inhabit both and coincidences mount up. Then disaster strikes in each world at the same time. In his dreams, Dan is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Meanwhile, after one coincidence too many, Cath thinks that Rick’s dreams are hiding an affair and leaves him.

Is Rick going crazy, or can he be living in two places, in two times, at once? If not, then which one of them is the reality? Will one life carry on when the other is on hold?

Richard Dee’s fast-paced, edgy science fiction -cum- psychological thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

Amazon

My Review:

I enjoyed this fascinating story by Richard Dee.

Rick’s life on earth is tedious and mundane, until he takes an untested medication for insomnia and starts to have vivid dreams of a ‘future’ life, on another planet.

In contrast to Rick’s daily grind, Dan’s days with his wife, Vanessa, exploring Ecias, are filled with action and excitement.

However lucid, a dream is just a dream, until Rick meets Esther Phay, and the coincidences mount up. Dan being accused of murder on Ecias and Rick’s wife accusing him of having an affair, leave Rick wondering what’s real.

The main characters were well fleshed out, and the world building was excellent. I could see the flora and fauna, and the wonderful scenery of Ecias.

Which life is real and which is the dream? Or are they both real? I need to know. With the cliffhanger ending, I’ll definitely be reading the second book of this two-part story.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.)

Insane by Hollie Thubron

19250456_1583756291722464_8249608971830352342_o

“My name is Avery Blake. I will be the hero for the next 300 pages. Well, in my opinion I will be anyway. After all, this is my story.

My primary occupation is as a pharmaceutical rep. I hate to say I do love the sales and I definitely love the cash… But it doesn’t send adrenaline shooting through my body and make me bounce up and down like a kid in a sweet shop.

51Qpcg7NUvL._UY250_

No, the things that really get me going include painting, volunteer work, killing, tap dancing and golfing.

Yes, you read that correctly.”

One person’s crazy is another person’s reality, with so much in this world being left to interpretation, is killing really wrong? Are serial killers really insane? Anyway, who are you to judge?

The locals of Southhurst would never dare wonder the streets alone at night, since there has been a serial killer terrorizing the area for fifteen years. But Avery Blake isn’t afraid.

Avery Blake is a serial killer. She kills because she enjoys it. But how long can she go on like this, before someone catches on?

Insane is a psychological thriller addressing the different perceptions of morality and what influences them.

Amazon

My review:

In the Presence of Knowing is an amazing introduction to the Secrets of Windy Springs series.

We meet an amazing cast of fleshed out, unique, and non-conventional characters.
Keisha is strong and yet vulnerable. Rogan is kind and compassionate, and not the typical handsome hero.
Captain Dash is eccentric and is one of my favourite characters.

The setting was beautifully described. I’ve never been to a Renaissance Faire, but it’s now somewhere I’d love to go. I loved the ‘family’ bond and the atmosphere that was depicted in the book.

This is a wonderfully written book, with a mysterious storyline that kept me engaged.
I’m sure there are plenty of ups and downs still to come in this series and, after the sudden cliff-hanger at the end of the book, I am desperate to know more!

SlitherTitle: Slither
Genre: Paranormal, Horror

We’re often told tales of the underworlds to feed the darkest corners of our nightmares. We tuck them away with the sunlight and laugh away the fear our minds created. But the daylight offers no relief for Zari. She’s hidden her waking nightmare as nothing more than a damaged past. The venom of her secrets consumes her, as well as those she cares for most. Emmett, the love of her life and the only one with a past dark enough to respect her space, becomes a pawn in the war against the demonic force which is her bloodright. Can Zari overpower those out to get her to feed on the innocent? Can she save Emmett from the evil of Slither?

Amazon

My review:

Much more than a horror story…

A fascinating story that kept me on the edge of my seat and was impossible to put down.
The well thought out and unique plot twisted it’s way through this well-written book.

The main characters were well-fleshed out, each had their own flaws and abusive pasts to deal with, but worked wonderfully together to help and heal each other.

The villains were dark and menacing characters and easy to hate.

HeckledTitle: Heckled
Genre: Thriller, Psychological

Drinking. Drugging. Cutting.

Exxel Jensen has spent his life finding ways to rid himself of the Heckler, and failed miserably.

On the surface, his future is bright: a beautiful wife, a child on the way, and a career he loves as a stand up comedian.

Beneath the surface lurks the darkness: crippling depression, anxiety, and alcoholism.

Helena Jensen has seen her husband spiral downward before and feels helpless to stop it as she watches him falling again.

She would do anything to help him, anything to diminish the pain that plagues him.

Exxel knows she would, and he also knows she can’t.

Because the person fueling his depression and addictions is someone she can’t see.

And how can he explain the Heckler to anyone, when he doesn’t even understand it himself?

Amazon

My review:

The author takes the reader on a dark jouney to the depths of despair in this accurate portrayal of depression.

As someone who has depression I could relate to the feelings of worthlessness that Exxel experiences, and count myself lucky I don’t have a heckler.

Well done, Valarie, for tackling this much misunderstood condition, with care and compassion!!

Amazon
