Seven Days of Electric Eclectic Novelettes – Day 7

Miriam's Hex

Miriam’s Hex

by Paul White

A dark tale of greed, selfishness and latent curses, laced with black humour, in a light-hearted way.
Although there could be lessons learnt from Miriam’s Hex, it is intended to be a simple, enjoyable tale of witchery and mischieve…or not.

Amazon

Review:

How often do we say things like “I hope you choke” or “I wish you were dead”? We don’t really mean it (most of the time)… this story may make you think twice about wishing someone ill.

In Miriam’s Hex, we meet a nagging wife, Miriam and her henpecked husband, Peter. Both were great characters, one to be hated and the other to sympathise with.

I enjoyed this dark and fast-paced tale in which Miriam’s off-hand comments have dire consequences for Peter, but is it coincidence or is it deliberate? You decide!

Paul White:

009052_7cbc048426f64e8ea87d5d46492c9494_mv2.pngI live in God’s county, otherwise known as Yorkshire, England.

I am actually a southern boy who slowly migrated northwards during his life, married a Yorkshire ‘lass’ and ended up staying.

I have been living in the ‘North’ for about thirty years now; in another thirty I should no longer be classed as a newcomer.

Whatever story I write about, I like to weave emotions, passions, sensitivities, perceptions and empathies into my writings. I feel adding the human element captures the heart and soul of those reading and inexorably draws people into my fictional worlds, so, the instant they look up from the page it takes a few moments of realisation before ‘the real world’ comes flooding back.

I am loving Electric Eclectic books because it gives me the opportunity to share some of my greatest novelette stories with you.

The Chaconne

The Chaconne

by Neil Douglas Newton

The dead don’t rest easy when injustice exists. When the restless spirit of his world-famous soprano mother struggles to expose the truth of her murder, Ted must open himself to her message. Someone still living knows the answer. Can Ted find the killer and bring peace to his mother’s spirit?

Amazon

Review:

Ted is being haunted by his mother who wants him to find her real killer.

This is a spooky tale from new-to-me author, Neil Douglas Newton.

It’s an interesting and compelling tale of an estranged family with an unexpected ending

Neil Douglas Newton:

3d68ce9b15a922252883f8296239507e.jpgBorn and raised in Bayside, New York, Neil Douglas Newton was telling stories almost as soon as he could talk. Along with his love of music, he developed a talent for writing prose and song lyrics.

A computer programmer by day he indulges his love of writing and making music at night and on weekends.

The Chaconne was born from his love of Bach as well as a homage to his late mother who was a classically trained coloratura. Binding these together, he created a ghost story with a twist.

In Seed Money, as with many of his works, Neil draws on his New York experience to create a tantalizing tale of good guys versus a bad girl.

His first book, The Railroad contains scenes that parallel his own experiences on 9/11 in the subway in New York.

Neil is a transplanted New Yorker who currently resides in East Tennessee with his wife, writer Elizabeth Horton-Newton, in a 100-year old haunted house.

One Christmas

One Christmas

by Karen J Mossman

“My name is Tina and I want to tell you about what happened to us one Christmas. My story is sad and funny and ultimately the happy ending we all love.”

Life is full of ups and downs and even when things are bad, there is always humour, because life is like that.

Amazon

Review:

Tina is a wonderful character and easy to relate to. Her story is superbly told in this wonderful and poignant story about a family coping with tragedy. Sad, humourous, uplifting, and filled with hope.

An emotional story, about ordinary people with normal lives, that’s easy to imagine being a part of.

Karen Mossman has an amazing talent for taking ‘everyday’ situations and turning them into relatable and interesting tales that are a joy to read.

Karen J Mossman:

9c1ed96139d1d6d1d7129cafb294992dI’ve always had an active imagination and it needed an outlet. So as a child I’d make up stories to tell my siblings.

As I teenager, I wrote pages and pages of words that made no sense to anyone but me. Eventually, a spark of imagination was all it took for them to become fully formed

These days I’m a multi-genre author and writing for Electric Eclectic will enable me to explore a good mix of stories.

My first book under EE is a family drama at Christmas and my second is a Science Fiction story where the heroine travels back in time. I had such fun writing this one.

Look out for a diverse collection of stories from me in the future.

A few years ago I moved to an island with the most beautiful of landscapes, both sea, beaches and countryside. Long walks taking in the views releases my muse, and my imagination will know no bounds. One day I’ll write a story just for you, set on this mysterious island.

I love words and on my website, you’ll discover a magical world.

Follow my website at the Magic of Stories and take a break from the real world to one of escapism.

Operation Debt Recovery.jpg

Operation Debt Recovery

by Ian Welch

A short novelette. Brandon is meandering through life. His dreams of a big house, a modern car, and a lovely girl to share it with, is a fantasy. It’s not happening, his job is boring, and his bank account is dismal. Something has to change. Perhaps a holiday in Las Vegas might provide some inspiration, a kick start to a new future.

Or maybe it’s the start of a trip to Hell. Brandon never foresaw the can of worms an exciting week in vibrant Vegas would unlock.

Amazon

Review:

Brandon is not satisfied with his mundane life and boring job, he wants more… more money, more excitement.

His trip to Vegas proves not to be as positive as he intends, and the repercussions send him into a downward spiral of debt and despair. Losing his job could be the final straw, but fate has a way of intervening.

Operation Debt Recovery is an interesting read, with a wonderful twist, or two, and you can’t help but root for Brandon, at the same time as berating him for his folly!

Ian Welch is a ‘new-to-me’ author, and I will definitely be adding a couple of his books to my to-read list!

Ian Welch:

db57d37e9e079e18c63bf783cad3beb0LIKE most authors I write what I like to read. I blame Wilbur Smith for igniting the passion in me. After being introduced to one of his novels after many years of being ‘too busy to read a novel’ a strange thought entered my brain. ‘Could I write like that?”

I’d like to think my writing is like a good vintage of wine. Every year that ticks over my masterpieces, like the wine, get exponentially better. I’m just hoping I reach perfection before father-time taps me on the shoulder.

Writing about yourself is always hard. I’m a KIWI, after travelling extensively, I’ve come to the conclusion I’m blessed to live in NZ. Brilliant scenery, little crime by world standards (the police don’t carry guns), and a laid-back small population.

I flirted with studying criminal law and accountancy before the lure of the land claimed me. I farmed for many years, owned several city-based businesses, moved to the idyllic Bay of Islands and started writing. And a little fishing.

When I think about my writing credentials my mind immediately moves to a book writing by Sir Bob Jones, a local with an outspoken persona. A bit like an early Donald Trump. Bob’s book was titled ‘The Achievements of the Fourth Labour Government.’ It consisted of 250 blank pages.

My writing resume is slightly better, I dabbled with writing small articles for a local newspaper, my job description was ‘reporter.’ I now have 6 published novels and a few bubbling away in a vast melting pot. I love writing, I’m addicted, it’s my drug of choice. And an occasional bottle of wine.

My first contribution to Electric Eclectic was Chantilly Lace, it was born after a reunion with a group of friends from my teenage years.

They said. “when are you writing A Fifty Shades of Grey?”

Not being one to back down I replied, “I’m starting tomorrow, and you guys have starring roles.”

Liberty

Liberty

by Markie Maddon

The reign of Hatshepsut, the first female Pharaoh in Egyptian history, is threatened by the actions of her stepson, Prince Thutmosis. But Hatshepsut’s daughter, Neferure, takes matters into her own hands to ensure the path of destiny her mother began.

Amazon

Review:

Chelsea Freeman has a strong feeling of Deja-Vu when she visits Valley of the Kings for the first time. Suddenly transported back in time to the fifteenth year of Hatshepsut’s reign, she experiences a few days as Neferure, daughter of the first female Pharoah.

As a fan of Markie Madden’s Undead Unit series, I was tempted to read Liberty, and found the story a wonderful mix of fiction and well-researched history. The detailed and descriptive writing lets you visualise the setting as you follow along with the intrigue and rivalry of the Pharaohs ‘court’.

Liberty reveals another side to the authors writing, as well as her obvious love of Ancient Egypt.

Markie Maddon:

da6616e1a6ee65e2529f2ef10b184424When I was in 4th grade, my teacher would draw a partial shape on our papers, and the assignment was to finish it into a drawing and write a story about it.

This was when the writing bug first bit me. I continued to write through high school and shared my stories with my classmates.

In 2013, I was diagnosed with cancer. This illness and treatment took me out of the traditional workforce, so I turned back to my love of writing.

I now live in southeast Missouri, USA, with my husband, two daughters, 3 dogs, a cat, and a horse.

Now, I’m writing and publishing several books a year, from my paranormal mystery Undead Unit series to a historical romance series set in ancient Egypt.

I wrote Liberty as an Electric Eclectic Book so new readers will have a sample of my work.

I hope you enjoy reading Liberty. You can find my work wherever books are sold.

AMBERGRIS

AMBERGRIS

by Rush Leaming

An uncertain 22-year-old stepping out of his comfort zone.
An elderly woman with a vibrant past on a long ride home.
They cross paths on a bus trip along the U.S. Southeastern coastline, a journey that takes both of them on a shocking and unexpected ride.

Amazon

Review:

Daniel leaves his privilaged and sheltered life, and his comfort zone, for a long trip by bus to meet his fiancee.

On the trip he meets Cassandra Smalls, a ‘nice, quiet church lady’, who has lived life to the fullest.

As they tell each other about their lives, Daniel realises that his life doesn’t have to mirror his parents’ lives and that he can change it.
Life is what you make it!

AMBERGRIS is a poignant and inspiring short story that introduced me to author, Rush Leaming.
