Jake’s placid, anonymous life in Italy is shattered by the arrival of an assassination squad hell-bent on eliminating him–and he has no idea why he’s in their crosshairs. He’s saved only when an American scientist intervenes, wielding strange technology that briefly reactivates Jake’s dormant memories and deadly skills. As unknown enemies continue to hound Jake’s every step, the scientist helps him reconnect with lost friends and loved ones who believed him long dead.

Guest Post:

Hello, and thanks for being here! It’s all about making new friends, and introducing you to characters whose journeys will keep you turning pages until late into the night. In that spirit, I wanted to tell you a little about me and my buddy, Jake Bronson.

I lived in a 400-yr old apartment overlooking a canal in Venice, Italy, when I started writing Jake’s story in Brainrush. I’d visited the Old City several times before in my life, but each departure left me with a yearning to return. So, when I came back the next time, I did so with a determination to feature the city’s haunts in my very first novel. I walked the cobblestones late at night, absorbing the sights, the sounds, the smells, the history, allowing my mind to run free. The following mornings I’d hover over my laptop at outdoor cafés, sipping cappuccinos as I breathed life into characters who’d lived in my mind for so many years.

The thriller that unfolded on the page was about second chances, and living every day of one’s life as though it was the last. It was a natural first step in my writing since Jake Bronson’s emotional journey—as an Air Force pilot who faces a terminal diagnosis—paralleled my own. In his case, however, I gave Jake a parting gift by endowing him with extraordinary mental abilities after he suffered a traumatic accident at the beginning of the book. I drew that aspect of the story from real-life incidents, where ordinary people develop uncanny abilities after a blow to the head—to become what are known as “sudden-savants.”
Jake’s journey grew from there, and before long I had him swept up in a race against time to save a woman and her autistic child from the clutches of a megalomaniac. The story takes him from the beaches of California, to the canals of Venice, the Grand Casino of Monte Carlo, and finally to an ancient cavern deep in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, where he discovers his gift carries a price tag that threatens the entire human race.

I loved weaving that first tale. Imagine my excitement when Publishers Weekly called it “A terrifically entertaining thriller,” and it became the #1 bestselling Action/Adventure in The Wall Street Journal. Of all the novels I’ve written, it’s still my favorite. If you’ve read it already, or are about to, I hope you “hate” it as much as the reader who wrote:

Dear Mr. Bard, I hate your books! They keep me up late at night and irritate my wife! Once I read a few sentences I am hooked and can’t put it down! I have just downloaded the next one in the series… How am I going to get anything else done because of these page turner books???

That’s an actual email message I received in March of this year. I loved hearing it – so if you have the same reaction to Jake’s story, I hope you’ll reach out and let me know. That’s the kind of ‘hate’ mail this author can’t wait to get! And guess what? The fan who sent that letter has since written back to tell me his wife is now hooked on the series as well. Made my day!

Snippet:

Raúl had never felt more alone. Suddenly, he saw his life ahead of him in this colony, full of nights like this where he was among people but without anyone caring if he stepped off the harbor into the ocean. He wondered if he would fit in. When he had left Spain, he had been running from heartache. He had been running from pain. But if he thought he could find its antidote here, among the pretty little ladies who beckoned at him with their eyes and lips from the doorways of the thinly-veiled brothels on this Philippine street, he felt hopeless. Each of the ladies’ faces reminded him of a beauty at home. A beauty who had repudiated him for worldly and political ambition.

Playing with Fire

by Clare Meyers & Cris Meyers

51qE0iSS3OL._SY346_An interesting beginning to a new series.

Magic, shapeshifting and crime all blend together to make this enjoyable read by husband and wife team, Cris and Clare Meyers.

Talented thief, Renee and her partner, Stone, join a trio of shapeshifters, Rook, Carlos and Grace, to steal a magical gem, and take revenge against the man who set them up on a previous job.
But in their line of work, nothing is quite what it seems.

Although the book is much more about the planning and the action, I did enjoy getting acquainted with the characters and hope to get to know them better in the next book of the series.

Loner Renee Devereaux is a thief with a lot to hide, and trust is a risk she rarely takes. Stone Anders is a mercenary and hitman, but being a hired killer isn’t fitting like it used to. But while they are criminals, they are anything but common. Renee and Stone are Talents, and their supernatural powers give them an edge in a high stakes business where one wrong move could be their last.

It’s always just one job, and everyone scatters—sometimes in less than favorable circumstances. For Renee and Stone, that’s business as usual. But things change.

A chance at revenge draws Renee and Stone into a job they know they shouldn’t take. The job: Steal a dangerous magical artifact before it can be used. Along with the deadline, they’ll have to deal with a loudmouth hacker with problematic connections, a rookie who still believes in ‘right’ and ‘wrong,’ and a professional liar with a cat’s curiosity.

Worse, something just doesn’t feel right.

But this is their job. They have a reputation to maintain, a paycheck to earn, and a score to settle…

Fly by Night

by Clare Meyers & Cris Meyers

31925656The ‘gang’ from book 1, Playing with Fire, are back. They’ve moved on from the events in Seattle, but they haven’t forgotten, or forgiven.

This, the second book in the series is told from Rooks point of view and is a superb sequel.
Rook never knows when to keep his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself, which makes for some great moments. Half the time I wanted to gag him, the rest of the time I wanted to hug him!

The characters all evolve and grow in their own ways, during the story, and we learn more about them, their past and their relationships.

The plot is well thought out, and this book has more action and suspense than the previous one.

I enjoyed Playing with Fire… I loved Fly by Night!

The game has changed.

Rook is a wisecracking hacker, a shapeshifter who prefers the name ‘were-crow,’ and former underling to a Talented crime boss. But as supernatural powers go, he’s no heavy hitter.

After a job blew up in his face, Rook thought the worst thing he’d have to deal with was criminal unemployment. But when he starts losing his mind to mysterious voices, being broke takes a backseat. And once his apartment goes up in smoke, Rook knows he’s in trouble.

Out of his depth and trying to dig his way out of a hole not entirely of his own making, Rook must put his survival—and his sanity—in the hands of people who have their own mysterious reasons for helping him.

With trust in short supply and time ticking down, Rook will need to find a way to make this uneasy alliance work before even more of his life goes up in flames.

Code Wolf

by C.D. Gorri

34747449 I really enjoyed this new book from C.D. Gorri.

As with her previous books, it’s set in ‘Grazi Kelly’s world’. This one, however, is definitely not YA!

I loved learning more about Randall, and his unexpected love interest, Tulla, along with Tulla’s special son, Danny.
The book is well-written, easy to read and hard to put down. The descriptive writing allows you to join the fleshed out characters on their adventures.

“He never thought of himself as a family man, but sometimes things changed… ”

Randall Graves spends most of his time writing lines of code in his air-conditioned office at Macconwood Manor. He’d rather be alone than risk involvement of any kind. Everything was going fine, until his Alpha sends him on a forced vacation.

It’s all good with Randall, as long as there’s WIFI at the small, beachfront, bed and breakfast in Bloody Point, South Carolina. He could work and get some sun at the same time, but he wasn’t counting on Tulla Nirvelli. The beautiful single mother owned and operated the small B &B with her seven-year old son.

Charmed by the small island and the young family, Randall finds himself enjoying his time at the Sea Mist Bed & Breakfast. When trouble starts brewing for Tulla and her son, Randall is ready to jump in, but that means revealing his secret. Will she accept the truth about him?

The Name of Death

by Joshua Robertson

33636392 I enjoyed this short story from Joshua Robertson.

It was a well-written and entertaining read.
The characters were fairly well fleshed out for such a short tale.

A good introduction to the authors writing and to the world in his novels, which I look forward to reading.

Drada Koehn is a fearless, formidable fighter ensnared in a presaged war against the northern humans. When the Speaker foretells their victory upon discovery of the name of death, she sets out to unravel the mysterious prophecy. Now, bound by duty and honor, Drada faces untold horrors with her companions, searching for what may never be found. In a story of unexpected twists, she soon finds that her resolve to see the quest done will be the fortune or doom of her people.

Dark Legends

32721381 I enjoyed quite a few of the books in this set and will be looking to read other books by some of the authors.

If you like stories with Dragons, Ghosts, Mermaids, Shifters, Vampires, Witches… and much more, you’re bound to find a story in here that you enjoy.

Some of the stories worked well as standalone reads, while others were obviously part of a series.

As a bunch of the books were steamy (one or two more steam than story) this is definitely an adult only box set.

All in all, this collection of books was good value and a great way to find ‘new-to-me’ authors.

This Collection is packed with more than 20 full-length Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance reads from New York Times, USA Today, and International Bestselling Authors!

Don’t miss this collection of more than twenty unique twists in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, providing over one million words of supernatural suspense that will transport you to new worlds with smoking hot action and heart-throttling adventure!

The DARK LEGENDS boxed set includes: Mermaids, Sirens, Shifters, Vampires, Dragons, Sorcerers, Warriors, Angels, Faeries, Demons, Witches, Psychics, Ghosts, Mythology, Folk Tales, Legends, Dark Magic, Time Travel, and More!

The Last City (The Last City #1)

by Logan Keys

33968428Until nearly the end of the book, you go back and forth between two stories, told side by side from the point of view of two people, leading totally separate lives. You know they are going to link up, but you don’t know how.

There’s mystery, suspense, action and romance. Real characters with depth and emotions. Some amazing world-building and a unique plot.

There are some ‘slow’ moments, but that just gives you chance to breath.
All in all it’s a well paced page turner.

The ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered, which sets you up for the next book.

I can’t wait for the sequel!

Sixteen-year-old Liza was prepared to die from cancer, but instead she’s been gifted super-strength. Since the undead plague, the world’s gone crazy: Evil dictators, mad scientists, sick kids imprisoned on an island, and experiments that have created the stuff of myths and legends.

When Liza meets Jeremy Writer, an anarchist rousting the people to revolt, she has a choice to make. Risk imprisonment, or join the rebellion. And she finds she has a talent for enlisting allies to their cause.

Tommy’s a normal seventeen-year-old boy, that is, until he’s angry. The Underground’s created super-soldiers to fight the regime holding the last city. But he struggles to contain his monster more and more, and Tommy wonders how much of himself will be left when they arrive. He’s got too many who rely on him, to give up now.

If Liza can’t help spark an uprising, and Tommy loses control before victory, then the last of the population will be purged, and freedom will be nothing but a memory.

The Last City (Formerly Gods of Anthem) is a young adult zombie dystopian tale that faces all odds in a post-apocalyptic world. Fans of The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, and Divergent will devour this thrilling series.

La La Land (The Last City #2)

by Logan Keys

33229910Wow!

I might’ve had to wait a while for the second installment in The Last City series, but it was totally worth it.

This epic story continues in the same style as the first book, with different points of view and separate story lines that keep you wondering how and when they will join up.

The characters (new and old) are still ‘real’ with depth and emotions, and the world building is superb. The pages are filled with non-stop action and suspense, twists and turns, love and hate, and happiness and heartbreak.

The unique and engaging plot kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and left me wanting more!

A rebel who’s been revived to save the world. A soldier with a monster locked inside.

Liza and Tommy return to a destroyed America, continuing their fight for freedom, only this time, their search for allies will end with the same madmen and women who’ve engineered new monsters in an attempt to create the perfect soldier.

Faster. Smarter. Hungrier.

These rejects from the special program have replaced the undead at the top of the food chain.

Blood suckers roam the wilds, while brutal youths trap unsuspecting travelers.

No place is safe.

If Tommy and Liza can’t stop the warmongering council that rules the new fortress, they might not get a chance at freedom again.

Grab your copy today.

Following the best-selling novel The Last City (Gods of Anthem), La La Land is a must-read for fans of dystopian zombie books, and young adult fiction. Those who enjoyed The Walking Dead, Divergent, or Hunger Games, will love this sequel that delivers an epic tale of survival until the heart-stopping finale.

Right to Silence (Paranormal Detectives #4)

by Lily Luchesi

33871964 Another great book in the Paranormal Detectives series.

This one is a book of two halves, so you get two amazing stories for the price of one!

The first half follows Brighton and Mark’s relationship through both lives, past and present, and is an emotional story, with a heartbreaking ending.

The second half picks up where Life Sentence left off, with Angelica still ‘missing’ and Danny trying to make a life away from her and the P.I.D. Add in multiple murders, a kidnapping, an ancient prophecy and some trips into hell and you have a book filled with action and surprising twists.

This book is somewhat darker than the previous ones in this awesome series…
…and I can’t wait for the next one.

The truth can be deadly.
In the first of this two-part novel, we learn the history of hunters Brighton Sands and Mark Evans in their two lifetimes, culminating in their final battle with the insane vampire they have been hunting for centuries.
In the second part, with Angelica Cross still on the run, multiple vampiric murders lead to the kidnapping of a famous vamp. Detective Danny Mancini must drag a mortal into the bowels of Hell in order to rescue her.
But why does Leander Price want her so badly, and what does she have to do with an ancient vampire prophecy?

The Storm Creature

by Maria Gibbs

29508156An intriguing short story that hooked me on page one and kept my attention to the end. I was glad to be able to read it in one sitting, as I didn’t want to put it down.

The descriptive, and almost poetic, writing created a creepy and tense atmosphere. It was an emotional book, with a tragic ending, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This is the first book by Maria Gibbs that I’ve read and I’m certain it won’t be the last

At eighteen, Lucy had everything going for her: a supportive family, a rapt audience, and her dream of becoming a published author about to be realized.
A single moment in time on a dark, rainy road changes things forever.
That was then, but this is now. Lucy has suffered through eight years of haunting visions and thoughts with every raging storm thanks to a tempestuous storm creature who torments her. What does the baleful creature want with Lucy? Will the troubled woman ever be able to let go of the past and forgive herself?
Or will she sacrifice everything she holds dear?

The Ceiling Man

by Patricia Lillie

33825471The Ceiling Man is a great psychological horror novel. I enjoyed this well-written and gripping book.

Told from various points of view, the characters are believable and get under your skin.

I’m still unsure who or what the “Ceiling Man” was, but I wouldn’t want to meet him.

I received this book for free via Kindle Scout.

A novel of slow burn horror.

Carole knows there can be no tie between her autistic daughter and the strange events in Port Massasauga. It’s not logical. It’s not possible.

The Ceiling Man has picked up other watchers in his travels, but they all dismissed him as a nightmare. The girl is different. She knows he’s real.

Teenage Abby is an innocent. The stranger only she sees and hears introduces her to evil. When Carole falls under the stranger’s sway, Abby must solve the puzzle of The Ceiling Man and save them both.

The Him Deep Down

by Chad Lutzke & Terry M. West

26248542A dark and twisted “zombie novelette”.
The zombies play second fiddle to the darker horror contained in this well-written short story.

In a decaying world that’s lost its battle against the undead, a group of desperate survivors search for shelter deep in the Texas woods. But they discover something far worse than the dead that command the earth. Prepare to meet the Him Deep Down! Authors Chad Lutzke (Night as a Catalyst) and Terry M. West (What Price Gory?) team together to offer a zombie story with a different kind of bite.

Title: Knights of Enmity
Author: Sedrie Danielle
Genre: Urban Fantasy
knights-of-enmityFall into the magic, action and ever spiraling chaos that is the Knights of Enmity!

Never had there been a time when enmity did not exist between Man and Angels. During the time of the Light Wars, the ancient Order of the Grigori blessed 9 sons of Adam with the power to defeat Gabriel’s hordes. The 9 founded the first of the 33 Orders of Man who swore to protect Earth from the wrath of Heaven.

Rufus Sosius, leads the degenerative Black Knights of the Order of Magia Chaotica; the most powerful of the 33 Orders of Man. While each Knight has taken a vow to maintain the balance of light and darkness in the world while upholding the will of the Council of 9, they find themselves ensnared in the drama of life as a series of bad decisions and fleshly weaknesses creates enmity between the Orders.

Dante the Seer has a vision of the coming war and warns Rufus Sosius of the Prophet’s errored interpretation which lead him to the idea of awakening the sheeple, the common man, to the world of magic. Against the advice of the Council, the Prophet awakens the masses but quickly finds out he was wrong by doing so.

As agitation amongst the Orders rises, Heaven has sounded the horns of the Reckoning as foretold in Revelation. Heaven descends upon the lower realms, it is Lord Samedi and his Barons who meet Heaven’s swords with their own.
