Books I Read July – October 2016

Dragon Moon

Julie Nicholls

32501925Another amazing book from Author, Julie Nicholls.

I enjoyed Dragon Moon. It’s beautifully written, easy to read and hard to put down.
Julie has an awesome way of bringing her characters to life and I fell in love with them, both human and dragon, and hope we haven’t heard the last of them.

I’ll admit that, at times, this wonderful adventure made me shed a few tears, but it also made me smile.

This book is a great, clean fantasy which, in my opinion, will appeal to fantasy and dragon lovers from mid-teens and up.

Save the dragons, unite the races, no sweat.

I’m nineteen and wish I had a clue about my future. Instead of my own bed, this morning I woke in the strange land of Lur Neval. My name is Scarlett, but the Nevalese call me Dragon Mage. Seems it’s my job to preserve the all-important dragons and oh, while I’m here, bring peace to the warring clans. Piece of cake if I can outwit Madoc, the manipulative, evil seer who wants every dragon destroyed. Whatever it takes, I’m here to fulfill my destiny under the light of the Dragon Moon

The Wastelanders

Tim Hemlin

22213025Reading A Friend in Need inspired me to read Tim Hemlin’s Wastelanders.
I was fascinated by the brief introduction to the world and its characters and needed to know more.

The story starts with a bang and had me hooked from page one, with it’s unique and strange world filled with interesting and believable characters.
The plot is intelligently thought out and well written, with surprising twists that add to the complexity of the story

Marvellous!

America is controlled by a corporate oligarchy known as the Water Cartel and warrior-priest Joey Hawke finds himself trapped between a mysterious geneticist amassing a clone army and a group of political fanatics convinced that a dead president will rise from his tomb to lead them to salvation. Caught outside his spiritual haven when the Cartel moves against the Wastelanders, Joey is aided by Bear, an enigmatic weapons runner, a lovesick Scrapwoman, and Bernie Hawke, his estranged father. But against the Cartel’s military strength, led by the power hungry Rex Fielder, Joey’s only hope may be Si-Ting, a young woman with prescient abilities–a woman who not only holds the key to his heart but also to an American conspiracy to crown its future with the withered laurels of the past.

The Kota Series: Complete Box Set

Sunshine Somerville

25391754Never a dull moment in this amazing fantasy/ sci-fi series from author Sunshine Somerville.

The descriptive writing brought the various worlds, scenes and situations to life as I joined the four Kota warriors on their journey through space, time and dimensions in order to save humanity from an evil and deadly virus.

The characters are well-fleshed out and completely believable, each with their own flaws and vulnerabilities, and I enjoyed watching them develop as the series progressed.

Each book has a new setting and additional characters, but flawlessly continues on from the previous book in the series.
All four books are filled with danger, excitement and action, plus plenty of twists, turns and intrigue.

This series was a definite page-turner and a good lengthy read that gave me something to get my teeth into!
I enjoyed it immensely and will be looking out for other books by Ms. Somerville.

Adam Dreece

30286780Set in the near future, in a world of new start-up businesses and ruthless companies, this book is an intimate and up-close look at the life of Niko Rafaelo, a genius innovator of nano-technology.

Niko and the cast of supporting characters are well fleshed out and the relationships between them are well written and believable.

It’s an interesting and imaginative book, that kept me turning the pages.

Niko Rafaelo – a brilliant and driven inventor- is determined to flip the late 21st century on its head with a new take on a banned technology, nanobots.

The Wizard Killer – Season One

Adam Dreece

29838890This book from Adam Dreece is a short but action packed story.
I really enjoyed discovering this confusing world through the eyes and mind of the unnamed main character, who isn’t sure who he is, where he is or why he’s there!

The story clipped along at a good pace and pulled me along with it, but left me with a multitude of questions. I want…no… need to know more about this world and its inhabitants.

A world once at the height of magical technology and social order has collapsed. How and why are the least of the wizard killer’s worries.

Leaning my bloody head against the back of the crashed levitating carriage, I flex my cramped fingers. With a renewed grip on the mana-pistol, I steal a quick breath. The others better wake up fast, otherwise we’re all going to burn.

Enjoy all 20 pulse-pounding episodes, and an all new side to best-selling YA author, Adam Dreece.

Recommended for adults, appropriate for most 12+ .

Note: This is written in an episodic, serialized style.

Ghostly Writes Anthology 2016

51mfu0kl4slIf you like ghost stories, you’ll be entertained by this excellent creepy collection of short stories from a wide variety of authors.
Some stories were scarier than others, but they were all well-written and most held my interest.
As is usual with the variety of tales in anthologies, I found some of them more enjoyable than others.
In fairness to all the authors involved, I’m finding it difficult to choose only one or two favourites, although Cabins by JB Taylor, Canvas by Sarah Moiser, Hello Dear by Stewart Bint and Ruby Kisses by Jessica Wren are at the top of my list…
and I would love to read more of Soul Man by Claire Plaisted.

Enter the chilling Ghostly Writes Anthology and be prepared to be scared with 27 short stories from around the world.  Creepy houses, murder mysteries, paranormal and much more to haunt and thrill those who dare.
