Books I Read July – October 2016

Dragon Moon

Julie Nicholls

32501925Another amazing book from Author, Julie Nicholls.

I enjoyed Dragon Moon. It’s beautifully written, easy to read and hard to put down.
Julie has an awesome way of bringing her characters to life and I fell in love with them, both human and dragon, and hope we haven’t heard the last of them.

I’ll admit that, at times, this wonderful adventure made me shed a few tears, but it also made me smile.

This book is a great, clean fantasy which, in my opinion, will appeal to fantasy and dragon lovers from mid-teens and up.

Save the dragons, unite the races, no sweat.

I’m nineteen and wish I had a clue about my future. Instead of my own bed, this morning I woke in the strange land of Lur Neval. My name is Scarlett, but the Nevalese call me Dragon Mage. Seems it’s my job to preserve the all-important dragons and oh, while I’m here, bring peace to the warring clans. Piece of cake if I can outwit Madoc, the manipulative, evil seer who wants every dragon destroyed. Whatever it takes, I’m here to fulfill my destiny under the light of the Dragon Moon

The Wastelanders

Tim Hemlin

22213025Reading A Friend in Need inspired me to read Tim Hemlin’s Wastelanders.
I was fascinated by the brief introduction to the world and its characters and needed to know more.

The story starts with a bang and had me hooked from page one, with it’s unique and strange world filled with interesting and believable characters.
The plot is intelligently thought out and well written, with surprising twists that add to the complexity of the story

Marvellous!

America is controlled by a corporate oligarchy known as the Water Cartel and warrior-priest Joey Hawke finds himself trapped between a mysterious geneticist amassing a clone army and a group of political fanatics convinced that a dead president will rise from his tomb to lead them to salvation. Caught outside his spiritual haven when the Cartel moves against the Wastelanders, Joey is aided by Bear, an enigmatic weapons runner, a lovesick Scrapwoman, and Bernie Hawke, his estranged father. But against the Cartel’s military strength, led by the power hungry Rex Fielder, Joey’s only hope may be Si-Ting, a young woman with prescient abilities–a woman who not only holds the key to his heart but also to an American conspiracy to crown its future with the withered laurels of the past.

The Kota Series: Complete Box Set

Sunshine Somerville

25391754Never a dull moment in this amazing fantasy/ sci-fi series from author Sunshine Somerville.

The descriptive writing brought the various worlds, scenes and situations to life as I joined the four Kota warriors on their journey through space, time and dimensions in order to save humanity from an evil and deadly virus.

The characters are well-fleshed out and completely believable, each with their own flaws and vulnerabilities, and I enjoyed watching them develop as the series progressed.

Each book has a new setting and additional characters, but flawlessly continues on from the previous book in the series.
All four books are filled with danger, excitement and action, plus plenty of twists, turns and intrigue.

This series was a definite page-turner and a good lengthy read that gave me something to get my teeth into!
I enjoyed it immensely and will be looking out for other books by Ms. Somerville.

18801788BOOK 1: The Kota
The future is an ugly place, but we are not left without hope…
Earth in Trok’s day is plagued by war and the deadly DRK virus. His brother, Lee Kandoya, joins the Kota people’s movement to fulfill prophecies meant to save Earth, and Trok’s world is turned upside-down as he discovers the truth about his own role as the prophesied Kota Bearer and immortal Interceder.
Five hundred years later, the prophesied Kota Warriors of the Mark Prophecy are at last born. Loree Kandoya is gifted with the mysterious abilities of perfect hand/eye coordination and invisibility. Her brother, Zaak, has mutate-genes that enhance his senses. A girl named Alex turns out to be a telepath. Her brother, Ryu, is blessed with incredible mutate-genes of strength.
However, nothing about these Marked children is what Trok expected, and the world is now in chaos…
Centuries of war have left entire countries in ruin, abandoned, and the global population suffers from poverty, the plague of the DRK, and oppression under a global tyranny known as the Dominion. Soldiers sweep the regions in search of rebels, and hundreds are murdered – or punished with the DRK – as the Dominion rulers hoard their wealth.
Will the Warriors be able to make a difference? Working in the background, Trok knows that if the Warriors are going to bring down the Dominion and stop the DRK virus, it’s going to take a miracle. But how things come together surprises even him.

20570776Book 2: The Ebonite and Her Earthling
For the Kota Warriors, everything has changed. Trok has abandoned them. Cruelthor has disappeared. They’re cut off from Earth, never to return. On their own, what purpose do they serve now?
Ebon is a desolate planet never meant for human life. The Ebonite colonists have long been trying to exterminate the native Kynajabi creatures, and the Warriors soon find themselves entangled in the turmoil of their new world. The Warrior Seer becomes a god-prophet, working to guide the suffering citizens and veterans of the Kynajabi Eradication Effort. The Hunter and the Fighter continue the search for Cruelthor, but soon an unexpected source tells them of a new mission. And the Warrior Leader? Well, it’s up to Cliqani to heal her mysteriously resurrected Earthling patient, who may be able to save the colonists from the native beasts. However, it’s Trok’s Ebonite friend who holds the secret to restoring peace for Ebon and its inhabitants.
Together, the Warriors and their Ebonite hosts must learn to sacrifice for the benefit of others – even others most alien.

22136256BOOK 3: Pharmakon
Phantasya is a world of second chances. It’s also a world fated to test man’s faith. In this supernatural paradise, trials and revelations arise for each Kota Warrior. Rave and Arctos must travel back to Ebon to finish a mission they thought was over. Amu teleports to Rowen and discovered a secret hidden since Earth. Kynacoba and Galcon fight a devilish enemy who could lead the Phantasyans into horrific rebellion against their Guardian.
Meanwhile, the isolation of Trok’s immortality begins to take its toll. Knowing how this future will end, he must do what is right for everyone involved.
But how do you best fight a losing battle? The more the Warriors discover, the trickier their choices become.

23608838Book 4: Zenith Prophecies
The Kota of Zenith have waited centuries for the Warriors. Now, their Empress insists that Rave force their last prophecy into fulfillment, despite what it will mean for Kynacoba.
Shocking them all, Cruelthor is discovered on Zenith with the DRK virus, and it’s then that Amu’s Magi mission becomes clear. But how are the Kota of Zenith not immune?
With the help of Neema and Toel, two Zenoes with secrets of their own, the Warriors must discover what it truly means to be Kota.

C.D. Gorri

32670475Another fast-paced, well-written, easy to read short story from C.D. Gorri

Continuing Angela Tanner’s exploration of her newly acquired witch powers.

The Man of Cloud 9

Adam Dreece

30286780Set in the near future, in a world of new start-up businesses and ruthless companies, this book is an intimate and up-close look at the life of Niko Rafaelo, a genius innovator of nano-technology.

Niko and the cast of supporting characters are well fleshed out and the relationships between them are well written and believable.

It’s an interesting and imaginative book, that kept me turning the pages.

Niko Rafaelo – a brilliant and driven inventor- is determined to flip the late 21st century on its head with a new take on a banned technology, nanobots.

In a world that has been battered and bruised for decades by endless natural disasters, Niko’s ambitions are seen as reckless and wasteful.

Following in the footsteps of his Silicon Valley heroes, Niko’s startup takes the planet by storm. But what happens when the corporate beast and Niko’s conscience conflict? And what is he hiding?

The Man of Cloud 9 is an intimate science fiction tale of high tech and higher stakes. An all new side of the best-selling author, Adam Dreece.

The Wizard Killer – Season One

Adam Dreece

29838890This book from Adam Dreece is a short but action packed story.
I really enjoyed discovering this confusing world through the eyes and mind of the unnamed main character, who isn’t sure who he is, where he is or why he’s there!

The story clipped along at a good pace and pulled me along with it, but left me with a multitude of questions. I want…no… need to know more about this world and its inhabitants.

A world once at the height of magical technology and social order has collapsed. How and why are the least of the wizard killer’s worries.

Leaning my bloody head against the back of the crashed levitating carriage, I flex my cramped fingers. With a renewed grip on the mana-pistol, I steal a quick breath. The others better wake up fast, otherwise we’re all going to burn.

Enjoy all 20 pulse-pounding episodes, and an all new side to best-selling YA author, Adam Dreece.

Recommended for adults, appropriate for most 12+ .

Note: This is written in an episodic, serialized style.

and I would love to read more of Soul Man by Claire Plaisted.

about-the-author

tracy-falbeI am the author of 10 novels, including The Rys Chronicles and Rys Rising epic dark fantasy series and the historical fantasies Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale and Journey of the Hunted: Werewolves in the Renaissance 2.

I was born in Michigan in 1972 and grew up in Mount Pleasant. It’s called the “Mountain Town” but there is no mountain and it’s debatable about whether it’s pleasant. They say it’s a party town and based on extensive research as a young adult I can concur.

Because I always had the childhood fantasy of running away and joining the circus, I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995 and lived there until 1997. Those who only stay a week are wimps, but I will say that it’s the second year in Vegas that wears you down. Then I realized the pioneers were trying to get to California, so I moved to Chico, in Northern California and lived there until 2009.

In 2000, I earned a journalism degree from California State University, Chico with the conscious ambition of becoming a fiction writer. With the rapid demise of the newspaper industry and journalism in general, novelist is not such a daft pursuit after all. It’s not like I’m actually going to get a job that values my education. Luckily I’m cursed with the impulse to write in a popular yet competitive genre.
My wandering has circled back and I’m currently residing in Battle Creek, Michigan, and for now my existence within the post-apocalyptic Rust Belt is suitably fascinating.

emily-martha-sorensen_2Hi! I’m Emily Martha Sorensen!

I’m a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy, and I write clean books that are intelligent, optimistic, and happy. I write for all age levels. Picture books? Got one. Chapter books? Got a series. Middle grade? Sure thing. Young adult? Most definitely. New adult? Working on a series right now. ALL of them, no matter what the age of the main character, are both intelligent and clean. I believe that children deserve smart books, teenagers deserve fun books, and adults deserve imagination, a sense of wonder, and books aimed at them that are G or PG.

I have two comics: A Magical Roommate, which is complete (it’s actually G-rated new adult, and was always intended to be that way: I started it when I was eighteen and couldn’t find clean stories about people my age), and To Prevent World Peace, which is currently ongoing (think a magical girl series from the point of view of the villains).
I’m a bit of an oddball. I refuse to write what’s popular: I write the stories I believe should exist. If those happen to become popular, I would be delighted. I won’t change what I write just because the crowd’s doing it. I’m pretty flexible about which forms my stories take, though.

My husband is Benjamin A. Sorensen, who writes fantasy. His first book is Prophecy, and it’s pretty awesome. He’s a wordsmith, and he usually writes standalone epic fantasy.

Interview with Lauren Smith:

How did you choose the genre you write in?

Well that’s a funny story, for the longest time, I didn’t know I was a romance writer in my heart. I grew up reading sci-fiction, fantasy and literary fiction, not romance. But when I was in law school and really started pursuing a career in writing, one of my good writer friends pointed out that I kept writing love stories within my story. She said I should read some romance and then see if I want to write it. I did…I read a Christina Dodd novel and was hooked! So then I started writing romance novels and the rest is history!

How did your journey as a writer begin?

I began writing when I was in the third grade, I was determined to fix the ending of the Titanic movie because I didn’t want Leonardo’s character, Jack, to die. So started re-writing the entire story and I realized I had a love of storytelling and wanted to tell my own stories!

When you consider your future, what would you like to make happen for you?

I would really love to write full time and survive on my books so that I can retire from my other job as an attorney. I want to be able to travel the world and write in exotic lands and get inspired with wonderful stories!

Which, if any, of your personality traits did you write into your characters?

I write a lot of my own personality traits into my characters. People by nature are supremely complex and we all have a lot of different traits. So naturally for different characters I draw on different parts of myself in order to give the characters that complexity which makes them relatable.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names are fairly important. I don’t always focus on the meaning, but I like to look through lists of names and then as I see the names, something usually jumps out at me and I picture the character with that name and it either works or it doesn’t. I love finding unique names for my characters.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would probably tell my younger self to make sure to stop and have fun along the way while in school. Until I started pursuing writing as a career I worked really hard in school and didn’t focus on having fun or enjoying life. I pushed myself very hard so if I could give advice to my younger self it would be to relax and have fun along the way.

If you could go out to lunch with any literary character, which would it be?

Harry Potter. He defined fifteen years of my childhood as I read him growing up. I was part of the Harry Potter generation and meeting Harry Potter would be incredible.

What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

Sleeping in to start. I usually get up at 5am. Then walking my dogs in the neighborhood with the perfect weather and then spending some time by the pool and catching up on reading. Then finishing the evening with dinner and a movie with friends.
